Our watches celebrate the world, and they help protect it too.
The CuleM Roadmap to Sustainability.
Swiss watches by their nature are long lasting.
Our product is not yet fully sustainable with its materials, however we can say they are durable and not disposable. The automatic mechanism means that our watches don’t use batteries and are powered by your natural movement.
CuleM is committed to being responsible and improving sustainability for the planet and society.
The first step on our Roadmap to Sustainability was to partner with extraordinary organisations which protect the essential elements of our amazing world - Land, Air, Water, Animals and People.
For every watch we sell, we plant 50 trees, protect over 25,000 square metres of threatened rainforest, help reduce plastic ocean pollution, and donate to projects that support impoverished women and children all over the world.
By donating at least 3% of our sales in this way, CuleM continues to contribute positively to many of the UN’s SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
In 2021, we took action to make all of our packaging plastic free.
Our leather watch straps are supplied by a member of the Leather Working Group, which means the leather is sourced from certified tanneries. This ensures they meet strict requirements on wastewater discharge, responsible water use and air emissions.
But there is so much more we want to do to improve our sustainability credentials.
We are a growing company and our budget is small, but we will keep moving forwards.
We calculated our Company Carbon footprint, looking at all areas outside of our product as a first step to self certification.
We have done this by performing a detailed analysis of our people, our travel, our use of energy, our facilities and planned activities.
We overestimated every aspect of this calculation to ensure we were going beyond Carbon Neutral.
We are offsetting our Company Carbon footprint by a 5x multiple, by supporting amazing projects such as developing clean wind energy and solar power in India & Taiwan, Hydropower in Uganda, Geothermal power in Indonesia, repairing water boreholes in Eritrea, turning waste bio gas to produce electricity in Thailand, and supplying fuel efficient cookstoves in Honduras.
We are delighted to confirm that we are now self certified with the Beyond Carbon Neutral organisation (who checked our credentials) as Company Carbon Neutral.
You can find us on their register.
We signed up to Terra Carta in May 2021, a charter set up as part of the Sustainable Markets Initiative and announced by HRH The Prince of Wales. This is a charter that puts Sustainability – Nature, People and Planet - at the heart of the private sector. Find us a named supporter on the Terra Carta Sustainable Markets Initiative website.
Most recently, we have confirmed that our website is hosted green and this has been independently verified by The Green Web Foundation. Our website hoster is using green energy or green compensation for its services.
Next Steps
We have a goal to offer watch collections where the movement components, dial and case will be made up of mainly recycled materials. This will be a significant milestone for us.
We plan to offer degradable watch straps for future collections, as well as travel watch boxes made from sustainable materials.
We have already planted over 18,000 trees in our CuleM Madagascar forest. We have protected over 5.7 million square metres of Rainforest. We are determined to plant many more trees and protect even more natural habitat.
We hope to become a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, who set a high bar for ethical practices. They are the leading standard setting organisation for the entire watch and jewellery industry.
Furthermore, we are targeting the attainment of externally audited certification for Company Carbon Neutrality, the step beyond self certification.
Moving forwards, we have set ourselves exciting and challenging objectives to achieve B Corp company status and also gain Product Carbon Neutrality certification as soon as we are able.
